ARTHUR'S PASS TUNNEL.
SATISI-'AOTOK V PROtittKSS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christeliurch, Last Night.
Very satisfactory progress is being, Hindi; 'Willi the Arthur's i'uss tunnel. According to a statement made by .Mr.; Murdoch -McLean to a representative of Truth, at the Otira end the tunnel is in 24 chains. The hydro-electric power plant is completed, and will in all pro* liability be ill operation soon after .Mr. .McLean aud Mr. W. H. Gavin, the recently appointed engineer in charge, reach Otira to-morrow. The similar plant at the Bealey end of the tunnel should be in operation about the end of next month. ;
The recently-made award of the Arbitration Court has evidently given as much satisfaction to the workers us to the contractors, and the relations between the parties at present are harmonious. So satisfied are the majority of the men that they continued at work during the holidays, instead of knocking. on 1 for about a fortnight, as the contractors fully anticipated would be the case. Of the 150 men or thereabouts engaged on the work only eight or ten knocked off for the holidays. .Mr. McLean thought he was justified in stating that tli'e Court's award had met with the approval of the men, at least it had removed all outward signs of discontent. To-morrow Mr. McLean nad Mr. Gavin leave for Otira.
