I The "little joke" excited malicious .laughter in Wall-street, where speculation was rife us to how Mr. Roosevelt ■would succeed in harmonising his duties ■as editorial writer on social and economic subjects, and the predatory Trusts ■iu particular, with the interests of hi; ■proprietors. ■ So important was the "joke'' deemed ■to be that the President, niter# Cabinet ■meeting to-day, issued an official statc■nieut declaring that he had not the 'slightest concern who were the stock'holders of the Outlook, ltis concern I(the statement continued) is with the ■general policy of the paper, which has ■been consistently admirable ill every re--sped. The President will be responsible only for what he -himself writes. ' It was alleged that the majority if ■tile. Outlook, stock was held by Mr. .Tames Ntillman. president of the National City j 'Hank, "silent partner" in the Standard Oil Company anil friend and adviser of ■Mr. llaniniaii. To-night, however, the ■treasurer of the Outlook issued a'state|.inent that Ml'. Slillman. as a matter of 'fact, owned less than 111 per cent, of ■the company's stock, which would not ■enable him to exercise the slightest authority iu the direction of suppressing any denunciations of oil Mr. Roose■velt might see lit to indite. Mr. Rooseirelt's salary on the Outlook is to lie '£oooo a year.
