SERVICE IN THE ROYAL NAVY
CONDITIONS FOR NEW ZEA* LANDERS. Young men resident in the colonies' can serve in the Royal Navy in 11.M. ships stationed in Australian and New Zealand waters under the following conditions:—
• (a) Candidates must- be British subjects of European extraction, able to read and write the English language, and must have resided for at least three •years in Australasia immediately prior to enrolment. They must pass a medical examination as to their physical Witness, and, if enrolled, will be vaccinated. Good teeth are a necessary qualification. Rovs or men with organic diseases or deformities will not be accepted. (b) The standard is as follows:--
Chest PleasureHeight. llH'ilt. •Boys from 15 to Hi \ years of age .. sft 2in • l)2in Hoys lrom 1(» to 18 %. years of agtj .. sft :iin in Men of all classes. & 18 years of age and above .. sft 4in 34in (c) Preference will l>e given to <ipplicants between 15 and 20 yearn who apply for entry in seaman branch, and 1 to those between 1& ami 23 years for ! eitok'er branch. / j ■ (d) Candidates, on joining, must sign . an engagement to serve for live yours, •if required to do so (boys for jive years from the age of 18), and must not expect to obtain their discharge before ■live years are completed, except under very special circumstances, and if th'.'v can be spared and are prepared to purchase their discharge. (e) 'Pay aud allowances per day:— Colonial Allowance in addition Pay. to Pay. ■Bo\v> .. .. (xl and id 1/Ordinary Seamen 1/Ji 2/•Able Seamen .. 1/S <tyKtokers .. .. 1/S and' 2/1 •'!/- •Artificers, artisans, and miscellaneous ratings, including mediesd, accountant, etc., are [mid at varying rates. Extra pay may also be obtained by qualifying in gunnery, etc., and by good conduct. (f) The colonial ailownii.ee will be placed to the men's credit in .such State Savings Bank as they may select when ■enrolled. No withdrawals will be allowed until expiration oP engagement, except with the approval of the Commanding Ollicer in special cases. • (g) A man completing live years' service from the age of 18 should return to hLs home with about to his credit in the .bank, and then, can join the local Royal Naval Reserve at his option. (h) Selected volunteers may be sent annually to England for two years to qualify for the higher grades of the service, and these men have to sign on •for a further period of five years from i the date of leaving for England. (i) Intending candidate* in Australia are requested to communicate with the Royal Xaval Registrar at one of the following towns in their own State: — •Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, •Kremnntle, or Jlobart, by letter, giving •age, qualifications, and branch of the •service they wish to enter. Candidates resident in Xew Zealand should communicate with the Commanding Ollicer of ill.M. Drillship, New Zealand, giving •necessary information. They will then be informed as to details and where to make personal application. ' (j) Candidates must bear their own expenses when making personal application for entry, and of return home if rejected, and will be required to produce the following documents: 1. Birth certilirate or statutory declaration or other errtittcate as to age. 2. References to date as to character. 3. Tf under the age of 21. written consent of parent or guardian, 1 properly signed and witnessed. (k) Further particulars may be obtained from the Registrars referred to in paragraph (i)j in the case of Xew Zealand, from the. Commanding Ollicer of II.M. Drillship. (1) Notices will appear periodically in •the Press when vacancies occur.
