CRICKET.
PAYMENT OF PbAYEUS. Sydney, January !). It is understood that there arc good prospects of a settlement of the troubl. between the Cricket Board of Council and players. V. R'ansford, the brilliant young Victorian batsman, has put up a remarkable record, as iu live consecutive Sheffield Shield matches he has compiled a century iu four, and missed by six runs only the century in the other game. He scored IDS) against South Australia last year at 'Melbourne, 11 and 129 aganst N.S.W. at Sydney, 2 and 131 against South Australia at Adelaide recently, 94 against X.S.YV. in his own innings during Christmas week, and 171 (not out) in the match against South Australia. . Edgar 11. Mnyne, the South Australian, who batted so well against Victoria recently, when he put together 142 is practically a colt in lirst-class cricket, for he has played in only seven interState matches. His success in each of the Victoria matches has been pronounced. At Adelaide recently he made 51 and 77 (not out) and in the match just played he has further distinguished himself as above after making only a few in the first innings. Though quite different in style from C. E. Polling, hj" may be bracketed with him as the most promising pair South Australia has brought out for many years. As a batsman Mayne reminds one of what J. R. M. Maekay was in his second year on turf wicket. Possessing height, reach, strength, unbounded enthusiasm, 'a good eye, and several fine strokes, lie strikes one as a future international representative of Australia. He already times the ball more accurately than, perhaps, any South Australian contemporary, save Clem Hill. His latest efforts should brighten his already good prospects of securing a place in the next Australian Eleven for England. In the Victorian matches E. R. Mayne had made 05, 28, 75, 20, 51, and 77 (not out), averaging 04.40 per innings, prior to the match now iu progress, in which his first innings score was not cabled, but in his second essay he put together 142. Against New South Wales he has not done so ivell in tile matter of figures 1, 24, 17, 38, 01, and 17.
