AUSTRALIAN HEAT WAVE.
' FOLLOWED BY FIRES. Sydney, January 0. The heat wave lias broken and a cool change set in last night, accompanied bv light rain in the south-eastern districts. Reports from the fire-swept districts disclose widespread devastation. Settlers along the Hawkesbury Valley, the South Coast and Hunter River districts are severe sufferers. Many lost their entire crops and some of thein their homesteads. Thrilling stories are told ot narrow escapes and heroic rescue wefrk. In the p.isl'oral district*,, besides many thousands of acres ol grass and crops, numbers of cattle and sheep polished.
