PRESENTATION' TO CAPTAIN UiWES. The gratitude of the members' of the Tarauaki branch of the Royal New Zealand Association of Veterans fur the kind treatment extended to them on board 11.A1.5, Cambrian last Friday finds expression in the decision to present to Captain Lewes a well-bound copy of the New Zealand Cyclopaedia (TaraI naki, llawke's Bay, and Wellington edition). The. volume, with the illuminI atcd .presentation page, is now on view I in Jl'r. K. Lmnsden's window in Uevon- . street.

I The inscription is the work of Mr. J. L. Black, formerly sergeant in the Tarauaki Killcs, and the painter of several reduced facsimiles of regimental colors for the Hides' orderly-room. The. illu-

mination consists of a representation of two crossed Hags—the colors of the Tarauaki ltifle Volunteers and the Tarauaki JMilitia, emblazoned with thword "Waireka," in which, battle these forces took part. Above the Hags, "Primus iu armis, IS5S,'' and the names of the forces appear. Below this is written in old English style, •■Presented to Captain H. P. Uwes, of IUI.S. Cambrian, by the Veterans of Tarauaki." In conversation with some of the veterans, a representative of this journal found that they were delighted with the welcome accorded them when they visited the ship on New Year's Day and with the courtesy extended to them during their stay aboard. They have since learned that it had been in Captain Lewes' miud that they were going aboard on Saturday, when he had in tended receiving them personally_ and arranging a guard of honor for their re ceplion and farewell.
