OPUNAKE CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. (From Our Own Correspondent). The annual sports meeting in connection with the Opunake Caledonian Society took place in the Recreation Grounds on Boxing Day, and proved most successful. The day being perfect, I tihere was a good attendance, and the splendid fields and close finishes provided an enjoyable day's sport. During the day a chopping contest for £5 a-side between Messrs. Duncan and Hi!ls was very easily won by the former. The ollieials all worked Well, partiouilarly the secretary, Mr. Donald Ross. All the events were got off well to time, anJ in one event, the Maiden Cycle, five out of eight competitors who were not ready to start when the pistol went were left. This had a salutary effect, and in succeeding events all the competitors were well up to time. The Opunake Brass Band, under Bandmaster Bishop, were present in their new uniforms and enlivened the proceedings. T'he races resulted as follows: -Maiden Race, 150yds—Oarvey 1, Topae 2.
