TARAXAKI JOCKEY CLUB. CHISISTAIAS MEETING. liie laranaki Jockey Club's Christmas meeting was concluded yesterday in splendid weather. The holiday was generally observed by tradespeople, and tile attcndnce was much greater than that oi last year. Racing was even, more interesting than on the opening day, several of the finishes being so close that none but tile man in the hox knew what h.:d really won. The victory •■f the local horse Glenullin in the N T ew rif mouth lland'cap was a most popular one, and both i ;iler and liorse receiv-1 eil a warm Teccpli..n ,n returning to scale. Lady Menschii;oli' got away with a double, the Electric Hack and Farewell Handicaps, in fine style, and Bagatelle scored a decisive victory in the Hurdle. Race. The sum of £5701 was handled by the totaliaator staff, making £11,700 10s for the two days, against £12,517 last year, but the deficit is more than made up bv the fees received from seven bookmakers on each day of the meeting. The Taranaki Garrison Band agaiu discoursed a pleasing musical programme, and everything passed off smoothly under the direction of the secretary, Ml. E. I'. Webster.

Proceedings opened with the Mangotuku Hack Handicap. Roliepotao and Tokoniant were withdrawn and punters picked out -Mendip as the liest of good things. Forward was best backed of the others, Golden Glow being the out- J sidcr of the field Gilrook misbehaved himself at the post and bolted a couple of furlongs. the tapes (lew up lie was slow to move, Mendip taking up the running from Golden Glow and Forward. Golden Glow drew up a little before the straight was reached and Shining Star made up a little ground. Once in the straight Mendip was given her head, and coming right away won by five lengths from Golden Glow, who just beat Shining Star by half a length after a good set-to. Forward was fourth. All started in the Electric Hack Handicap, Lady Menschikoif being installed favorite with Clonpett, Muskerado, Tanekaha and Flying Wind well backed. Flying Wind broke the line and "an along the back a couple of length ahead of Lady Menschikoif. Then came Mulgn Bill and Muskerado, with Clonpett and Lady Finella, who had been slow to move, running last. Lady Menschikoff was up with Flying Wind at the turn for home and had no diiiiculty in scoring by three-quarters of a length. Muiga Bill was over a length behind Flying Wind, and Muskerado was fourth. The last to finish were Clonpett and Lady Finella.

Timothy was an odds on order for the Hummer Hack Handicap, White i Star heing tlie only scratching. Clem-1 ency, Burton and Billow wore evenly hacked. Burton hopped out in front and was never headed. Timothy was I running second in the first furlong, but] quickly dropped back into last place, Clemency anu Billow following Burton in that order. The last three could make no impression on the leader, and Burton was left to win by three-quar-ters of a length from Clemency. Billow was over a length away third, and Timothy whipper-in. Maori UiUe was the only one to arop out of the Hack Hurdle Race, and at; first punters went for Black Bauuer, but 1 Lngerer's followers made it so warm that when the totalisutor closed down the latter was a slightly better favorite than Black Banner. Tokomaru and Bagatelle were in keen demand, but Drudgery was neglected. Bagatelle was taken to the front from the word •'Go!" and led past the stand, Tokomam being the most prominent of the others, ■Drudgery and Black Banner running together and Lingerer last. At the six 'furlong post the field closed up with the exception of Lingerer, who was still some distance behind. Tokomaru fell half a mile from home, and Lingerer dashed up into second place, but had 110 chance with Bagatelle, who sailed home an easy winner by live lengths from Lingerer. Black Banner was the same distance away tliird, and Drudgery was close up fourth.

The live horses carded for the Xew Plymouth Handicap went to the post, and this was the fittest race of the meeting. Glenullin was an odds on favorite, Xicotine, Kilmarnock and Mallet being backed in that order, and Wee Trinket was the outsider. Wee Trinket was first away from a good despatch, and came into the straight with Mallet and Glenullin o;i her quarters, Kilmarnock whipping in. Past the stand and out of the straight, the same order was maintained, but at the six furlong peg Glenullin had wrested second position from llallet, and at five furlongs the Lochiel horse was up with the leader. Here Xicotine rushed to the front, and the three raced neck and neck, with Kilmarnock and Mallet coming "fast. The quintette raced abreast to the straight, and a stirring race ensued. Glenullin, Kilmarnock and Wee Trinket were all in it at the distance, and the former finishing up his task i7i the gamest possible manner, scored by three-quarters of a length frooi Wee Trinket, and heads only separated Kilmarnock, Mallet and Nicotine. Waieri, Keiwaka. Pleiades, Goldwin, Hydraulic and Valentine were with-

drawn from the Hack Scurry, leaving a good field of ten runners. Sir Artegal. oil his first day's showing, was sorted ) out as the correct pea, Durability, Tauhara and Timothy being best supported of the others. From a straggling start Durability shot out, followed bv Clonpett and Sir Artegal, hut they had not gone a couple of furlongs liefore Jackson rusted C'lonpett to the front, and he eame into the straight with a com-' manding lead. Sir Artegal and Durability came well in the straight, but bad i no chance with the winner, who passed the judge's box a length in front of Sir! Artegal, with Durability, Timothy and Burton only separated by necks. Bismarck did not start in the Second Welter Handicap. Of the seven runners White Star carried most coin, .Tet de More, Marshall and Research being fancied in that order. Marathon and Marshall were first, away, followed by ■Billow aatk • White Stair. Research went through at the back and showed' the way to Marshall at the turn for home. Recreation under the whip putting in a good run. Bowling along ii» great style Research won easily lJy three. lengths from Recreation," wiio was a neck in front of the fast-finisiiin» White Star. Jet ile More appeared to stumble three furlongs from the finish, and was just outside a place. Tiptoe and Cyreire did not fulfil their engagements in the Farewell Handicap, which was a fine betting race, considering the small field. Kirsy, on her first day's form, was voted a moral, and was backed according!v. Kareroa Tadf Mensehikoff and St. "Maria were also well supported. Kareroa was early in tile van with Kirsly, St. Maria 'and ' Lady- Mensclnkoff following closely Be- 1 fore the turn was reached, TCirstv had galloped to the front and her v'ictorv ' was being loudly proclaimed when Tjad'rf l Menschikoff and St. Maria appeared on 1 the scene. Kirsty and f.ady Menschikoff were racing neck and neck, and the titter blushing resolutely got the better . of thfi Sylvia Park mare in the last bit ! anrl von an interesting race by a neck. • I. Maria was .-Jose up next, and Kare- i roa was a good fourth. The following are tli** 'Mails of the racing:— "
