ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday Night. Ivan Pierce, sixteen years of age, son of Mr G. N. Pierce, manager of the; 'New Zealand Insurance Co., was injured when diving from the Waiwera wharf. He was carried ashore by other batters, but died before a doctor arrived from town by special steamer.
FATALLY (JIiUSUL'D.
Wellington, Saturday Night. Shortly after mid-day to-day a simple but fatal accident occurred at the head of Queca's wharf. Mr. W. H. McPhail was driving one of the mail carts loaded with bags and hampers for the s.s. Arahura. When crossing the railway lines, a lorry bumped the niuil cart, and apparently shook McPhail off. He was dragged along for a short distance, one of the front wheels pressing against his body all the time. The wheel would have ultimately passed over his bodybut for the ready action of a comrade, who stopped the horse. He became unconscious and was carried into the "tally" ollice of the Harbor Board. Dr. Young was summoned, and attended the injured man and ordered his removal to the hospital. Shortly after the doctor's departure, however, .McPhail died before he could lie shifted. He leaves a widow and family.
A XAHHOW ESCAPE.
Auckland, Saturday Night. Constable Manly noticed ' smoke issuing from a house in Federal stret at 2.30 o'clock on Friday morning. He burst open the door," and rescued the occupants, Mr mid Mrs Hunter, who were half suffocated, and extinguished the fire. The fire was caused by a lighted candle setting fire to some'linen on a table.
