TARANAKI v. WANGANUI. The interproviucial cricket match, Taranaki v. Wanganui, was commence.! at Wanganui on Friday afternoon. FIRST DAY. The start was delayed by rain till ten minutes to three, bdt, fortunately, from that time the weather was all that could be desired. The wicket played a trifle slow, aim not too true, more than one of the Taranaki batsmen receiving nasty blows from the ball. This was especially noticeable with Williams' fast deliveries, which came very sharply off I the pitch.
The visitors' innings opened very inauopiciously, two wickets falling for six runs, hoth Perham and Crumble being caught of Holland's bowling. Sumner and Clegg added 25 for the third wicket, of which number Sumner had contributed 10 'when he was clean bowled by C. Holland. Robertsou was the next man in, and again a useful stand was made, but with the score at 04, Robertson's leg stump was uprooted by a, ball from liurrett. His 30 included iio fewer than ti.v. fours. Gudgeon followed, and stayed with Clegg until the score reached 123, but was then caught after compiling Id. Steeds was next, but had only made a single when a confident appeal by F. Holland for leg before wicket was answered ill lite allirmative. Mackaj's start was rather sensational, dr'ving a short-pitched ball to leg for sk, bu' he only added two more when a I beauty from C. Holland beat iiim all th? I wa\, s and shifted his leg stump. Eight I wickets were down at this stage for 141, but a good stand now ensued, King flipping Clegg to take the score to 208, and himself compiling 29. Richards was the last man in, but only survived one hall, when he was caught and bowled by C. Hr.ttou. Clegg carried his bat rightthrough the innings, and his was a really fine display. At the commencement lie played rather cautiously, but he soon had the measure of the bowling, and with the exception of C. Holland, played the bowling with the greatest of ease. He was not reckless, but was very severe oa any loose bowling, his cutting and driving being almost perfect, lie batted just on three hours, and did not give a chance. Once C. Holland beat him with a ball that broke fiom the oil', just missing the leg stump. Of the Wanganui bowlers, C. Holland was in a class by himself. With, only two short spells, lie bowled throughout the innings, and from the first hall he ki.pt a splendid length right through. Of his 22 overs only sixty-one runs were scored, and he captured seven wickets. F. Holland also (bowled well, keeping a much better length than usual. Williams was not a success, and, like most fast bowlers, he thought less of the necessity of pitching them up well than he did of his pace. Against a score of 209 Wanganui sent in Butterworth and Cave at a quarter to Aix: The start was rather sensa--1 tional, as off SouthalPs second ball, Butterworth was missed at mid-off by Petham, who dropped a fairly easy catch.
From this on, both batsmen batted faultlessly, and at the drawing of stumps had put on 08 runs, compiled in 45 minutes. Fours were frequent, and the bowlers, with' the exception of Southall, received rough treatment, one over of Gudgeon's realising 18 runs, of which Butterworth was responsible for 4 fours. Southall bowled steadily throughout, hut although he heat Cave twice in one over, lie did not manage to find the wickets.
