SPORTING.

TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB. CHRISTMAS MEETING. Ideal weather was experienced on the opening day of the T.J.C. Christmas meeting. Light pa as ing clouds and a g-.nlle northerly breeze kept the air tool, and it would be hard to imagine better weather for racing. The attendance was large and included a great number of the gentler sex, whose summer toilettes made the beautiful lawns a pretty sight. '1 he course was in capital order, and fast times were register ed throughout the day. The handicapper, Mr. George il«,p, did his work well, and. races w.-re fur the most pa it well contested, and iinishes very close. Mr. R. H. Aldworth. officiated" in the judge's box, and was very quick in putting the numbers up, his decisions meeting with universal satisfaction. Mr. A. W. Budge was fairly successful at the barrier, and Mr. J. C.Montefiore was a, capable clerk of the course. The stewards were only called upon to consider one protest during the day, that of Mr. H. Eva against Kaniwara, whose owner trainer had not a trainer's license. The objection was promptly dismissed. MU-. Dempster's Astraea was the onlv double winner on the first day, the 'Daystai mare winning the Huato'ki Plate and th First Welter Handicap in easy style Four first favorites scored, and punier: generally had a good time. The sum o'

£5999 10s was handled by the totalise tor, as against £6340 10s' last year, the deficit of £341 being more than made up .by .£143 10s received from sever. bookmakers, as against one last year Two full-brothers, Tanekaha and Waien won their races in good style. Stayboj fell in the hurdle race, but both ridei (C. Cochrane) and horse escaped in jury. The Taranaki Garrison Band, un der the baton of Mr. T. B. McConne'l. played a varied programme of music in finished style, and the catering of MiThompson was first class. Mr. E. p. Webster and the officials of the club dir all that was possible to make the gathering a successful one. The scratching pen was freely used fc

the Huatoki Plate, Red Star, Maori Rifle, Tauhera, Valentine, Gilrook, Andover and Mendip dropping out. Astraea was quickly made a warm favorite, with Clemency and Marshall next in demand. From a fair send-off Clemency and As traea were quickest into their stride : Kairoa being the last away. Astraea was in the van going along the back. Rohepotae having run into second placejust in frout of Clemency. The latter, in company with Denis, moved up at three furlongs, but Astraea was oui again before the straight was reached and coming on won easily by three lengths from Rohepotae, who" was ;. little over a length in front of Clemora. Clemency was fourth and Marshall and Denis finished next.

White Star, Timothy ,and Overtime were withdrawn from the Stewards' Handicap, leaving nine starters, of whom Tanekaha was "hot stuff," with Ladv llenschikoff and Pleiades next in demand. Mulga Bill was quickest away, Xicotine being next and Lady Menschikoff in the rear. Tanekaha improved his position along the hack, and was on the leaders' quarters at the head ol the straight. A fine race ensued, Tane kaha scoring by a short neck from Mulga Bill, with the fast-finishing Lady Menschikoff over a length away. Inaha. Whana, Nicotine and Burton finisljed in that order.

Keiwaka, Waddy and Denis declined their engagements in the Ladies' Purse. Bismarck carrying most c oin. Kaniwara and Gordon Park were also Well sup ported. When the tapes Hew up Cordon Park shot to the front a nd showed the way to Bismarck and Forward to the five-furlong post, where Kaniwara Started to move forward. Bismarck headed the leader at three furlongs, and Kaniwara, who had a bad run, came again, and catching Jet de More and Bismarck inside the distance, Mr. O'Drisc-01l landed

the Sylvia Park gelding a winner by a neck from the favorite. Jet de More was one and a-half lengths away third, and Forward and Maori Rifle next. Leader and Sedgemoor were the on'y scratehings i n the First Hurdles, Stavboy being backed as if he couldn't lose Black Banner had a large following and Lingerer came in for some measure of support. Lingerer was first to break the line, but Bagatelle quickly took up the running, and showed the' way into the straight from Lingerer and a compact ruck. Stayboy fell at the sceo id fence, and Bagatelle was out half-a-dozen lengths going out of the straight. At the six-furlong post Lingerer started to go up. Black Banner following, and before the straight was reached thev had run up to Bagatelle. Black Banner. jumping beautifully/landed ahead over the last hurdle, and, finishing stronglv,. scored by two lengths from Lingerer. with Bagatelle four lengths away and Drudgery in the rear. .T. Stanley, who rode the winner, was seen at his best. and the same horseman piloted Cassiope.i when the daughter of Linstock won both hurdle events last year. Star Rose was the only defection from Hie Christmas Handicap, Mallet bein<r a slightly better favorite than the Ta-» naki Cup winner, I'hlando. Wee Trinket took the lead from a good send-off but gave way to Fulminator, who led past the stand. Sweeping out of the straight, the order was Fulminator, Wee Trinket. Uhlando, Mallet and Kilmarnock. I'hlando improved his position! along the back, and Kilmarnock ran through the field. Three furlongs from home. Uhlando, Wee Trinket and Kilmarnock were level, with Mallet closing up. Uhlando was first into the straight, but Kilmarnock came o n the outside.' and getting the better of the top-weight inside the distance, won all out by" a length. Mallet was a neck a wav third,, W ee Trinket and Fulminator following' closely. Uhlando made a game effort, but the weight stopped the little son of Lilian, and although he looked well tramed lie was much finer and less ro-l bust looking than last season. Mikotahi, Mistress, Rohepotae and Jet de More were missing from the field for the \\ elter Handicap, and Astraea, who escaped a penalty for her win in the Huatoki Plate, was made a warm ord»r. White Star was smartest off the mark and led Paul and Astraea for four furlongs, where the favorite ran to the front and was not afterwards headed. winning easily by over a length from vinite Star, who was half-a-lenglh in front of Mendip. Paul was fourth ' Lady Finella, Pleiades, Goldwin, Hydraulic, Kairoa, Valentine and Clemoia were scratched for the First HackScurry, leaving nine runners. Waieri was freely talked of as a flier, and carried most money on the machines. Rifleshot was troublesome at the post and when the field got away Muskerado was slow to move. Durability led from Waieri, and Si r Artegal to the bolt ma turn, where the trio were together. Waieri's head was in front at the bend of the straight. lmt Sir Artegal was running gamely and disputed every inch of the run home. A fine race resulted in Waieri winning by a long neck from Si r Artegal. who was the same distance m front of Durability, -ivith Clonpctt next. '

Olenullin was the only one to drop out of the Flying Handicap, the public making Tiptoe a better favorite than Kirsiy. Tiptoe was troublesome at Hie start and kicked St. Maria rather badly. ( vrene was fir-t away, but Kareroa and Ivirstv .piickly ran past him. and at the four-furlong post Kirsty had drawn ivell clear of everything. Tiptoe was taking things easy in the rear. Kirsty gave nothing else a chance, and won by three lengths from Kareroa, with Cyrene the same distance a wav third. Tiptoe appeared to be pulled back at the turn lor home., and If he were a trier he was certainly r idden a verv poor race.
