A MISSED CHRISTMAS
The skipper of a collier from Newcastle to London had a curious Christmas experience three years ago. He had had a shocking bad passage, and had been on the bridge for 48 hours on end. He was half dead with fatigue when on Christmas Eve lie got Ilia craft safely berthed at last in the Thames. He told the mate to give the men liberty next day, and then turned in. When he awoke it was a lovely morning. He got up, dressed himself in his best, and went ashore, wishing the watchman " A Merry Christmas." " A day late, sir," grinned the man. "What do you mean?" asked the skipper. " It's Boxing Day," was the reply. So it was; the tired man had slept the clock round.
