RENT REBATES.

CROWN TENANTS' CHRISTMAS BOX. By Telegraph I —Press Association. Wellington, Lust Night. The question of rebates for prompti payment of rents came before the Wellington Land Board yesterday. The Commissioner (Mr. J. Mackenzie) explained that the .practice in this district had been somewhat different to that followed in two districts of which he formerly had charge, Taranaki and Auckland. In those provinces ten per cent, rebate had been allowed on all rents if paid within a month from the due date. In the Wellington province he had found the allowance in regard to land for settlements land only 5 cent. He had been moved in the matter some months ago, but before coming to any decision lie had gone round the district and met the settlers. He had come to the conclusion that whilst the settlers he had visited were doing exceptionally well and they themselves considered the allowance they were getting was reasonable, still, as all other land districts i'n the Dominion were enjoying the full benefit of the 10 per cent rebate he saw nq reason why the settlers in the district should be treated differently. This was a "matter that did not come before the Board, the Land Act specially providing that the Commissioner, together with the Deceiver of Land Revenue, were the sole persons who had to decide the question. Tho Receiver (Mr. Waitc) concurred in the Commissioner's view, with the result that the Ift per cent, rebate would now be allow ed oil all holdings that were entitled to it for prompt payment. Th», would be applicable to rents due at the end of the present month, and the Commissioner had no doubt, it would be an acceptable Christmas box to the settlers.
