There was once a young man who met two girls who were constantly together-. Now, he was an astute young man, anil lie desired to say something nice and •agreeable to this Indies, hut he knew that if lie paid a compliment to one of them, no matter which one, the other would instantly he hurt. So ho thought rapidly for a moment, and then said: "Ah, I know why you two girls are always together!" "And why?" asked the girls together. ''Because everybody says that a hand- j some girl always chooses a homely one as a companion, so that her beauty may be enhanced l>y the contrast." Either both girls would lie very angry with him or delighted after such a i'e- I mark. And what do you think happened? The two girls Ibluslied, and .said lie was a flatterer, and went their way together, each happy for herself and sorry for the other.
