BOARDING SCHOOL PROPOSALS
'l'he recvut ol tlie Board oi Governors oi me New Plymouth Miga Scnool to lorn a boarding establishment in connection witn tlie school was a most important cuaiige, and marked an epocil m the schools career. The discipline tne esprit de corps found under a boarding school system gave 'a an institution prestige to which no dayschool could hope to attain. Parents who live in New Plymouth would still continue to send tlieir sons elsewhere, but it was hoped that in time the New Plymouth liign School would serve tlu same purposes to other districts than Kelson, Wellington, Wanganui and other colleges were pcrlonning lor as. It could not be expected that New Plymouth could enter into competition with such well-established institutions for some time to come, but there was no why the school should n<'t perform even a more useful and important mission than it had done in the past. Mr. S. Percy-Smith was asked by the chairman to explain the proposals. Eo outlined the facts that had prompted the Board to consider the question of the establishment ol the boarding establishment in <KKinectionr with the school. Finances had not permitted them to move in this direction till now, and even now the Board would be able to start only in a small way. By the end of the first term they would he in a position to receive boardersboys .only at first. Later it would be possible to provide a separate establishment for girls. He hoped, a-ad believed, ■ that the new departure would be su;.cessful.
