Construction work 021 the North Auckland section of railways lias become so extensive that it has been necessary to appoint a resident engineer. The new officer is Mr. J. E. Duncdiu, Last Night, In response to a request from Captain Fleming, the (Shipwreck Relief Society has decided to vote £5 for relief of Cosset, sole survivor of the Kia Ora wreck. AN EXTRAORDINARY LETTER. Dunedin, Last Night. The Otajjo Harbor Board to-day received n letter which the chairman characterised as extraordinary. It appears the Art Gallery Trustees are willing to hand to the Board a piece of ground as a site for oflices. This ground was formerly the property of the Board, but was taken by the Government for railway purposes, though not used fo' such, being subsequently occupied by the Art Gallery Trustees. 'The Government now oilers the land to the Hoard at « rental of £3O per annum, the General Manager of Railways writing to that effect. The opinion was expressed that the Hon. Mr. Millar was not cognisant) of the contents of the letter, and it was decided to lay the facts before him. RAILWAY APPEAL HOARD.

The scientilic expedition to the Chatham Islands, which was to have left New Zealand in February, has been indotiuitely postponed, as various philosophical societies are unable to co-oper-ate in the undertaking at the time intended.
N.Z. STOCK H)R HONOLULU. Auckland, Last Night. A shipment of New Zealand stud stock is to be made to Honolulu by the s.s. Den of Kuthven, winch leaves here tomorrow. The shipment will consist of 105 specially picked merino sheep from the Uoek of Mr. Charles Coulter, of Marlborough; 18 Shorthorn bulls from the well-known herd of Mr. William Taylor, of Te Awamutu; and four Hereford bulls obtained from Mr. Frank "Moore, of Kai Twi, near Wanganui. This is the first shipment of stud stock made from New Zealand to Hawaii for tin? past eight years. The summer tourist service on the Wanganui river began yesterday. The boais now run daily from Wanganui, , 'Mondays, excepted, and daily from Pipiriki, Tuesdays .excepted. Much tourist traffic is expected this season. STATE OYSTER TIvADE. Wellington, Tuesday. In the course of an interview the Minister for Marine said the results of the picking and sale of rock oysters by tlie Government during the recent open season had been very satisfactory. The number of sacks sold was 11,005—a weekly average of 423. The receipts from sales exceeded the expenditure by a fair sum.
