DISTRICT NEWS.

MAKETAWA. Last Thursday, a boy named Robert Mather, while wrestling at the Norfolk Road school, had the misfortune to break the small bone in his arm ju..t above the elbow.

Last Friday night, December 11th, a concert and dance, to obtain money for the prizes, was held in the Norfolk Road school. The night was fairly cold, but a large crowd turned up. Mr A. YV. Ward occupied the chair. Miss Goodiu opened proceedings with a pianoforte soio. Next followed two songs "Flowers," and "The Buttercup," by the schoolchildren. Next was a recitation, "The Family of Seven," by that number of children. Following this was a song " Children Go." Then some of the younger pupils gave an exhibition of scarf drill. Next was a song, "Workers,'' the best part iu which was taken by the brewer who carried a bottle of "guid Scotch whusky." Then followed a song " Ivy." Three small girls then recited "The Kittens' Tea-party." Next was a song "Dolls," after which Miss L. Kivcll gave an exhibition of wand drill, following which was a song, •'Drummer Boy" (encored). Next was the dumb-bell drill. Mr 11. Quickfall contributed the song " Sister," and Miss M. Johnson a recitation. A dialogue, "Nebber niin' dc Why an' de Wherefore,'' by three seniors, and followed this closed the juvenile section of the entertainment. Mr Ward and Mr 11. Trimble then distributed the prizes. Tile dux prize was won by Keith Gn.icy, who also received a silver medal for his attendance, lie has attended nine years without missing a day—certainly bidding the record for the district, if no't for the province. I-]. Fischer and K, .Mather for the boys, and .Vita Jones for the girls, won the prizes for the cottage gardening. After all the prizes had been presented, a farce, "Tile flaunted Room," was staged. The characters were as follows :Mr R. E. Thomas as "Sir Harry Blunt," .Mr R. Yates as "Mr Cottongoods," Miss M. Jones as "Angelica Vernon," Mr Joe Burgess as "William the valet," .Mr C. Miiichinas page-boy, Misses A. and L. Heart as "Betsy" and "Kitty" respectively, i Messrs F. R. and W. Drown as " Bill Bailey," and ''Joseph" .respectively, and Miss !•'. Corney as ".Mrs Bel'l," Each one did his or her part well, and throughout the whole play no one was prompted at all. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" closed the concert. After supper had been handed round, the' room was cleared for dancing, the floor being in good condition, and fully occupied. Mr Joe Burgess, as usual, carried out his duties as M.C. in good style. Music, both accordeon and piano, was rendered by several of the dancers. The net proceeds of the concert, which all agree was the best ever held here, amounts to well over six pounds—a good sum for such a small place.
