The "Dannevirke summer meeting opens to-day. The only local horse engaged is fc-ir Artegal, who, with the Wailara-trained Shuja, was railed to Daunevirke yesterday morning. Splendid fields are anticipated at Dunnevirke, hack events especially meeting with generous response of owners. With twenty-five engaged in boih the Maiden, i% furlongs, and the Dash Handicap, 4 furlongs, sprint events will take as much "picking" as yesterday's | sensational boat race.
Master Douglas heads the list in the Raumati Hurdle Race and meets Don Carlos on Olbs worse terms than when he led the Mauser gelding home at Woodville.
Of the large field in the Uniutaoroa Handicap, Sir Artegal, Maiora, Shannon. Lass and Osiris have run well forward in their recent engagements. Osiris began very badly ia the Flying at Woodville, but put in a surprising run ovjr the last, three furlongs, beating all but Beaton Dale in the run home.
The Dannevirke Handicap should be a race worth watching. Moral and Loiret showed capital form recently, and White Lie is another on the improve, Geo. Price will pilot the latter.
Hernia disappointed a large army of followers at Feilding, but is said to be "able to catch swallows" when wanted. Henuia is jn the Maiden and Dash Handicaps, but will have to get away well to have a chance in the crowded fields in cither event.
Shujii beat Eclogue at Feilding, anil considering the hitter's double win since then, the Waitara-owned colt must she something out of the ordinary, hi taking ou Tunuit and Gold Lace in the Flying to-day his owner is evidently satisfied that he possesses a brilliant threc-ycar-ohl in the Soult—Sprite colt. Tunuit got a bad run on the first day at Woodvillc, but in the Railway Handicap he was quickly taken to the front, anil taking 'no chances scored by fully four lengths from the ancient Mussel, who ran surprisingly well and beat Nniuiiiii by a head for second money. The. St. Clement's mare Clonpctt is going well, anil should be at her best about Christmas time.
At the 'Wan'gnnni trots ou Saturday Airana won the Cup and president's Handicap; Kastbrnok the Maiden: Magnet the Pony Trot; Maud H. the Bracelet; Picrottc the Dash Handicap, and Freehold the Farewell. The club's first gathering was a very successful one as far as the racing was concerned, lint the "scaling" tactics of several "bonVs'' 'operating at the meeting badly beat all records. It is really time respectable bookmakers formed an association to protect their own interests, and (lie Parliament which was so quick to force the Bar Vons on to racing chilis should take some steps to eliminate the sharks, the purse-snatchers and the drunk-roll-ers, and give punters a fair chanc? of
drawing cash when they are fortunate enough to "strike oil." Many of the odds-merchants laying them at TaraTiaki meetings would make a rush for other parts if struck for a ''tenner,'' and if Parliament doesn't intend to rectify
matters, racing clubs should rise and deal a knock-out blow to the fishv mob. Tt is not so much a matter of striking a winner these days as a matter of the ability of the bookmaker to "pay tbo winner."
Weights for the Stratford meeting are due to-morrow.
