The long spell of line weather was on Alondav broken bv some nice showers
of rain, and, a> a result, the grass is looking much fresher. Rain was badh needed, as nearly all the local tanks wi'Yi' empty, and the milk supply was already being all'ected by the drought. On Sunday anniversary services were I held ill the' local Wesleyau church, in connection with the Sunday school. Rev. Wilder, of New Plymouth,' occupied the
pulpit during the morning, afternoon and evening services, and preached appropriate sermons. His address in the afternoon, specially for tile children, was
from the text. "Consider the lilies." There was a good attendance at all services, ami at the afternoon service the Oaoimi children were present en masse. The ,-pccial singing bv the children was a feature of the services. (In Wednesday the annual picnic will be held, and I I also a soeial in the evening. I The election is now all over for auj oilier three years, and things have ipiielened down, although there wasitot nearly so much excitement here this time as during the last New Plymouth byeelection. Probably being in a new district may have accounted for this. The , next excitement we are looking forward to is the Christmas holidays.
Several well-known New I'lyinouth bonifaccs had a rather interesting experience on Friday night. They passed through here in the morning eu route to Opunakc, in a line motor car. exciting the envy and admiration of all who saw them. ' Ealc that night, or rather early next morning, they returned on foot with their ear in tow of a pausing horse. .Something hall gone wrong with the works about two miles from here, and those who were privileged to sec them did not feel quite so envious. On Saturday a special motor ear was sent for to bring them into New Plymouth. It also broke down. Who could have been the Jonah?
WAIIAKA. The local meat works are in full produce next week. The well-known linn of Messrs. I TJKOIUNCI. The ways of that august body, the Tai-auaki Education Board appear to be like those of the heathen Chinee—peculiar. On the score of economy the Poind refuses to allow the residences of Die unfortunate teachers to be papered, but at the -new school residence in this district the dado of the rooms was, to the great satisfaction of the teachc". varnished. Orders, however, were given that paint must be used, with the result that a handsome varnished wall is now covered with paint. Further comment is superllnous. Sir Joseph Ward's reply to Mr. liuxton. .M.l', for Ccraldiiic,' deserves the closest attention and also the greatest, publicity, for it should be noted t.-ial thPremier emphatically declares Hint there are no dairy inspectors g.ia-itcl under ihe Act: thai the new regulations arc not -in operation; and that the only I regulations in force are those of liiil'l . which deal with the milk sold for hu- ! man isuiuption in New Zealand. It will lie remembered that caiy in Hie spring at a meeting .n rcpr-scninlive dairymen held to discuss the proposed regulations an ollicial of the Stock Department was present and informed them thai the proposed regulation, were less drastic than those 'of lllblj which would probably be put into operation if the new ones were not in the main agreed 10. The presence of a. real lite mandarin of the Stock Department evidently upset the equilibrium of most, present, for they meekly accepted that oll'it-inl's dictum and many- j-jiilcralcd in their districts the entity threat. Happily the rank and Hie, unlike their leaders, refused to accept without question the mere assertion of an ollicial. and it must be very gratifying |„ U„ IM , „],,, stoutly maintained Hint Hie lillll regulations were not applicable to ordinary dairymen, to liud Hint their , tentio'n is borne out by so high an authority as Sir Joseph Ward. Dairymen therefore please note Hint unless von an- selling .milk for liinuau consumption in New Zealand you are as free as air from inspectors or regulations, and it will be your own fault if you do not maintain that position or if you so sink IhaU your condition may be truthfully described in these lines of livron:-'
