AN OVERDUE SHIP. Nelson, Tuesday—The ship Don, inferred to in the London cables as being overdue, left London on oth August, and is thus 125 days out. She is commanded by Captain Hicks. She is consigned to Levin and Co., Wellington and Nelson, with a very large general cargo. The consignees are not anxious, as trips by sailers of I'4o days are not unknown to this port., The Don may have encountered baffling winds in the EngHsii Channel. She is heavily laden. . The Takttpuna brought 162 toils of ' general cargo from Wellington yester-1 day morning. Included there were 1745 bags of salt and a quantity of dried fruits. The Rotoiti, from Onehunga, yesterday morning brought 19 tons of cargo. Thfe included 120 bags of .manure, 25 boxes of .tomatoes, 20 crates of strawberries, and 53 cases of fruit. The Rarawa, which lias been undergoing an overhaul in Wellington, is due from there this afternoon. She will leave for. Onehunga at the usual time

' tonight. Home trade journals to hand contain " exhaustive description!: of the Union Company's steamer Makura, at present ou her maiden voyage in the Vancouver service. Throughout the ship, conveniently adjacent to cargo hatches, are ten hydraulic hoists, eight of 3dcwt and two of Sflcwt capacity. The two latter are so arranged that they can lift live tons through half the distance they can lift the oOcwt loads. The iiiaximu.n height of lift by these hoists is about Bflft. The hydraulic engine installed in the vnginc-room is capable of putting the whole of the ten hoists through a complete cycle within the space of one minute. Froin this fact alone it will be •raftered how powerful the installation is. the engine, in fact, being the largest and most powerful ever put into a ship for cargo-discharging purposes. I'p-to-datrn.'ss and elliciency characterise all the mechanical features on board this latest addition to. the Union Company's fleet. The boats are fitted withWeler's davits, Mill'* disengaging gear, and Captain Cameron's patent boat chocks.
