WATERING PLACE SCHEME

A public; meeting was called some months ago by his Worship (lie Mavor (or tlii' purpose ~f discussing wavs anil means of making use ol the beautiful seashore nature lias provided Xinv Plyiiiuulli with. A eomuiittee, known as tin- Seaside Improvement Committee, was set up to give lint moveiiienl a start, and mis now drawn up a scheme | whieh should attract a great man.' visitors to the low,, during llie summer months. The sthenic includes spiiris. picnics, and amusements of all kinds ■' extending from Boxing Dav till 2nd •lauuaiy, and also jinivides for tamping on the beaell. There will also be a visit from the training-ship Aiuokurn, and possibly one from a warship at the same

time. The contra] idea, however, is to induce the outside public to spend their summer vacations here. That this will be a direct benefit to the town is at once apparent, and should therefore meet with the approval and support of ail local tradespeople. The outlay m initiating the scheme will be very'considerable this year, and a guarantee fund was opened for the purpose some

time ago. The matter of canvassing for further subscriptions was then, owing to pressure of work on the secretary and members of the committer, held over for a time. It is now proposed to complete the canvass of the town, ami the -Mayor and secretary of the committee purpose calling on townspeople with that object during the next few days. There is no doubt that this is but the I commencement of a scheme that will ultimately prove a splendid investment to New Plymouth, and already we know that quite a number of families from inland towns have notified their, intention of camping on the beach for some weeks during this summer.
