A 'RHODES SCHOLAR" CANDIDATE. Bj Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A meeting of the Professorial Board of tlie Auckland University was held tlu's afternoon for the purpose of selecting this year's Auckland candidate for the Rhodes scholarship. There was only one applicant, Mr. V. G. Aldridge, whom the Board decided to select. The Auckland representative for the Rhodes honors is the sixth and youngest son of Mr. George Aldridge, of Auckland, who has been for twenty-live years pastor of the Church of Christ at Newton. The young student was born in Auckland, and has not jet attained his majority. He has gained his B.Sc, and has the distinction of being tlie first to win in one year three senior scholarships since the present regulations eani» into force in «83. .ArfJafcalfc "KILTIES" VOLUNTEER CORPS. Auckland, Last Night. At a meeting held to-night a new volunteer company, to be called the Atickland Highland Rifles, was formed. The meeting was most enthusiastic, and the enrolled strength is now given at f>s. It was stated during the meeting that no difficulty would he experienced in raising a sufficient guarantee to cover the cost of providing the corps 1 with an appropriate kilted uniform.
CABINET GRANTS. Wellington, Last Night. Cabinet to-day authorised votes for a district high' school and technical school at Hamilton and tor technical school buildings at Cambridge. Other votes passed were:- £.125 for Westport technical school. £ISOO for Maaawatu river protection works: £350 for a hospital- al Tnumariinui; £383 for a school at Wniharara, Auckland; ,C 300» for the Wcllington-Manawatu railway tablet working; £I2OO for fixed signal's for the same lines; £2OOO for the Wnnganui district high school; £285 for 'lie Otaun «chool ; CISOO towards tho lion of a drillshed at Dunedin; a ; O,00O for railway construction works and £40,0(10 for road votes.
