THE EDUCATION BILL.
A LIVELY DEBATE. THE BIGHTS OF ANGLICANS. Received 3, 10.10 ji.m. London, December 3. ' In connection with the Education Bill, there was a lively debate Oil the Government's resolution authorising payment of grants to education. Mr. J. Redmond complained that the 50s giant meant the run of Catholic schools. Mr. Alfred Lyttclton read an important communication from the Archbishop of Canterbury to Mr. Walter Bunciman, I President of the Council of Education, complaining that the payments on account of the transferred voluntary schools were utterly insufficient, involving as they did an annual average deficiency of I4s fld per child. Regarding i contracting-out schools, if they were maintained efficiently without an impossible strain on voluntary subscribers, ] the grants must be increased by at least Bs, and must rise automatically year by year. The Archbishop of Canterbury concluded that unless these essential demands were conceded he would he forced to the conclusion that the schedule took away what the Bill purported to give. Consequently a settlement seemingly attainable cannot be carried out.
SECOND CLAUSE CARRIED. ' Received December 3, 9 p.m. London, December 3. The second clause of the Education Bill was carried by 270 to (10.
