TRAINING SEA OFFICERS.
THE UNION COMPANY'S EXPERIMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At daybreak to-morrow morning the Union Company's training-ship Dartford will be towed out from the wool wharf to the stream to adjust compasses prior to leaving Wellington h the afternoon in tow of the cargo steamer Kamond for Kaipara. •Following is a complete list of the Dartford's first complement of apprentices:—Cadets, N. B. W. Haszard, Auckland; R. M. Wright, Mount Albert, Auckland; E. J. MeClellan, Gleninore, Auckland; R. H. Baigent, Wellington; J. A. Bunting, St. Albans, Christchuvch; C. F. Carey, Papanui, Christchurch; A. G. M. Christie, Ashburton; E. A. Peters, Dimcdin; 0. S. Wilson, Duncd'm; G. V. Jenkins,.Green Island; William Whitefield, Waikafca, Southland; A. T. Adam, Victoria. Australia. The. lads will receive such instruction in seamanship and navigation as will help them to qualify as officers after serving the necessary time afloat. The Union Company has supplied the Dartford with a library of over a hundred books, comprising technical works, on travel, scioncc, history, poetry, selected novels, and adventure. A number of games, such as chess and draughts, has also been placed on board for the lads. Their first experience of handling a sailing ship without the assistance, of a tow will be after the Dartford has loaded a cargo of timber at Kaipara, when she will sail for an Australian port.
