CHEAP CABLES.
A CABLE MANAGER'S VIEWS. Brisbane, December 1. Mr. Milward, manager ot the Pacific Cable Hoard, arrived here by the Aorangi. In an interview he said that the Pacific Cable Board continued to progress. lie regarded a penny-a-word rate as impossible if it was intended to produce sufficient revenue to cover interest and expenses. Otherwise it would require an enormous subsidy. The increased traffic would necessitate the multiplication of the cables. Ho believed there was a possibility of existing rates being considerably reduced. He would favour some reduction if it were on paying lines. He hoped to see the wireless system extended to the island* of the Pacific.
