[By Telegraph.—Press Association.— Copyright.] Received Dec. 1, My Melbourne, Last Night. lhe weather was flue, though hot, for to-day s matches. The attendance was exceptionally large. To secure the Davis Cup America had to win the two matches (singles)., Australasia requiring to gam one. Brookes met .Heals Wright, ami Wilding playe<l Alexander. Wright beat Brookes, (Xo particu ' ar t ' l ' s ma teh 'ife to hand.) With everything depending upon the result, the crowd watched the match between Wilding and Alexander in expectant silence. Wilding began as though he was free from care, lie car-
ried off the first two games, and, after losing the third, established a good lead of four to one. From this the American never recovered, the set going to Wilding at ft—3. It was bright, straighthitting tennis, with an element of freshness in it that ihad been lacking in the final stages of the previous matches. In the second set Wilding continued to play a fine game for his side, lie led at 2—l, and subsequently at 4—3. Then, taking his own service to love, he was ahead at 3—3. Every shot was applauded. The game was watched with intense interest. Alexander pulled up somewhit; but Wilding was not to be denied,
and, going on, pulled off the set at <j—4. Tlie third set was all Wilding's. It was not till he got up to 4—love that the public seemed to be fired with the idea that he must wia Alexander won his serve at 4—l, but Wilding went right on, taking his own service and then Alexander's, eventually winning the match and the cup amid immense cheering. The excitement was at fever-heat when Wilding made his winning shot.
THE PLAYERS INTERVIEWED. Received Dec. I, 1.23 a.m. Melbourne, Last Night. Wright, interviewed, said the fine play throughout the contest was the highest standard of any he had taken part in. It was also the closest contest he had ever been in, and the first time in history that a cup match had gone to the lith set.
Alexander declared that Wilding was too good for him. He was too tired to be interviewed.
Wilding was carried off the court shoulder high. He said that wiea AVright defeated Brookes he fully expected Alexander would heat him after his previous showing against Brookes, but Alexander did not play nearly 83 well. The tennis all through was infinitely better than that shown in the Wimbledon contest. It was the best j Davis Cup he had ever known.
