TURF TOPICS. (By "Jloturoa.") The Feilding Jockey Club's spring meeting ope us to-day, and judging by the splendid acceptances received for every race the club should add another success to an already brilliant record of meetings. A few years ago the Feilding club was considered a third-rater, but in the last few seasons, pursuing a go-ahead policy, it has pushed its-If into the front rank of meetings, year after year extensive improvements have been made and stakes considerably increased, a well-endowed classic event, the Feilding Stakes, of 500 sovereigns appearing on the programme. To-day's •Stakes have drawn representatives from the leading New Zealand stables, aj|d the presence of Flitaway, Armlet, and Gold' Crest ill the race will lend additional interest to it. Jlr, W. K Biilwcll won the event last year with; Elevation, and Provocation will carry his colours 10-dav.
The St. Andrew's Handicap has drawn a fine field. Moral has Ollis. more than he carried into second pine' behind Maninpoto last year. Tangi\)iioanit and The Lark have been galloping well, and Mahtita will have the services of C. Jenkins. Husbandman comes with a big reputation from Canterbury, and has landed in Feilding in tip-top condition. San. Jltlie was much too good for Rillemaid in a mile gallop at Opaki on Thursday morning. .While Lie ran well at the Canterbury meeting, and is a much-improved maiv. The I'lving Stakes, run over six furlongs, will see (he locallv-lrained pair, Coldcn Eagle and Sir Artegal, irridcr silk and with To;i Tuhi, Crncineila, and several other well-performed sprinters ■in the. race the result is likely to bring joy to the noble army of pencillers. Rangihaeta and Slmza, winners at Wnvcrley, are in the Aorangi Wellcr, as is also, strange to say, Aorangi. Strategist is galloping in good style.
Lyrist has heen galloping splendidly at Feilding during the week, and on Wednesday morning a gallop, in which he made no race of Paparaehi, was described as a really lino one.
Ifaeremai has gone down for (he. Waifuna Hurdles, in which he will be meeting a strong field. Master Douglas carries top-weight, and has a good record for one who has been so short a time a( the game. The (otalisator (says the New Zealand Times) .||:, s hist two staunch supporters in Ihe House by the rejection at the ballot-box «i Messrs. A.' L. D. Fraser (owner of Kurawaka) and C. F.. Major (who also has frequently something going). Mr. David lluick (owner of Tangimoana and Itaugipapa). who replaces Mr. W. T. Wood as Palmerston North's representative, may be relied noon to lill part of the breach. Mr. .T. Vigor Brown, who defeated Mr. -Fraser. is treasurer of the Napier Turk Racing I Club.
