THE END OF THE WORLD.
I D.W tip PROPHECY AT THE j CHURCH CONGRESS. SJG.\S - EULEILLED." I r- MANCHESTER, October 5. The Church Congress has been in a seriuiis mood In-day. Such subjects as "The Church in Wales," "The' Student \olunteer," -The Missionary Move- | mont," and "Lessons from the Pan-An-glican Conference" have been discussed. Hut the greatest interest of all centred ill a series of papers on "The Eschatolgy of the New Testament with regard to the end oi the world. The most .sensational paper was one bv the Rev. Hubert Brooke, of Uriglilon. ' He boldly I preached the gospel of the end of the world.
"The end may be near,' lie declared, and the crowded audience applauded. Here are some excerpts from his speech: • ''The first sign in the Lord's advent is found in Matthew XXIV., 14: "This gospel of the, Kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations ; and then shall the end come.' "There is no doubt as to the meaning of the sign. When the last hitherto unreached nation has received the witness of the Gospel, then the end shall come. The spread of missionary work over the world, during the last century, is the surest token that this sign is being fulfilled, and the sign will be fulfilled in the decay of the strong hand of the rulers of nations and the weakening of the governing forces of the nations or the world."
' : Who can look into the world to-day without seeing the rise of nil nations o'f strong forces hostile to all ruling power*, aiming at their over-throwing and destruction. The names of Nihilism, Anarchism, Communionism, and certain forms of socialism are sufficient to tell us that the present is a time of rebellion against organised forms of government and rule such as has not been, before in the world's history. "There are other signs in the near approach of the second coming. The last chapter of the prophet Daniel foretells that the time of the end shall be marksl by multiplied facilities of travel and large increase of the acquisition of knowledge. It is a commonplace of observation to-day that never were there such amazing facilities for travel nor such universal use of tliem as in this last fifty years, while the discoveries of science in the last fifty years are far greater than those o'if the three thousand years preceding. "The plain words of St. Paul as to the specific marks of ' the latter days' have so exactly found, and are now finding, their fulfilment around us that no watching eye can fail to see that the end must be drawing near. The tokens are «»y and elpjir to many watching eyes, and the dawn of glory is close at hand,"
