Sill WILLIAM RUSSELL'S REMARKS. By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Hastings, Wednesday. After the result of the poll hnd been made known, Sir William Russell, speaking to a crowd of about four thousand, people, said he had not stood for Hawke's Bay from any special desire of his own, hut because lie had felt he had a special public duty to perform. He felt he. had been beaten on his own merits alone—(cries of ''No!'')—because, his committees had worked energetically on his behalf whilst the Indies hail treated him in such a manner that though defeated, he frit proud ami happy. It had been said that he was too old for political life, but lie took this opportunity of asking them to hack him at next election, lie hoped that when >Mr. Dillon retired from pubhe life he would he able to say he had served his constituency as faithfully and as well as he (Sir .William) had done.
