Mr. Littlejohn, chairman of tlm Chamber of Commerce, declared that Australasia possessed shipping facilities second to none m tlie world, and in tli foremost rank stood the Union Company of New Zealand. Mr. Coulter thanked the company fc nutting such a magnificent steamer 11 the Vancouver trade. The fact that it was willing to do so much in providing such a vessel showed the company's faith in the trade between Australia and Canada. Mr. Jackson referred to the unsatisfactory relationship between the company and the Commonwealth Government. So far there was no agreement for the continuance of the service. The
Makura had been built in hopes of the future. If the company could get a contract for a good term of years it tfould be worth while being in the field. He trusted the Commonwealth Government would recognise the efforts of the company in providing such an up-to-date steamer.
