A DISTURBANCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Friday. In connection with the disturbances on the northern island of the Cook group, for the settlement of which it was suggested that a British warship should convey the Resident Commissioner on a visit of investigation, news just received states that on Ist July the rebellions natives of Rakalninga limited down the liritish llag and turned the Island Council from ollice, and appointed their ringleader, a man who wu-> formerly a teacher for the London Missionary -Society as governor. They appointed their own judge and their own police and fined those opposed to them. They also closed the European traders' stores till lOfclii August.
The Federal Council of tbo Cook Islands lias forwarded n resolution objecting to tlieir representation in the New Zealand Parliament by a member for the group, and; urging that the islands should be a self-governing community under the British Crown, since they were included in the Dominion for Imperial purposes only.
