WELLINGTON SITTINGS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Thursday. The criminal, sessions of the Supreme Court opened to-day. Mr Justice Cooper, in his charge to tnc (irand Jury, me 1tkmed that there were nineteen eases against twenty-two prisoners. lie thought lie might fairly congratulate the district upon the fact that for the first time during eight years lie had dtfen presiding at a Court there were no charges of offences against women or girls. Frank Christian Olsen was convicted of the theft of £4O from a dwelling .and was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment. Robert Shand, for forgery and uttering, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment. Wellington, Last Night.

John Patrick Collins, a young man, was found guilty of stealing a gold watch tfnd chain from the person of Charles Stuart at Otaki. He was remanded for sentence. An old man named Thomas Inchey, charged with indwell t assault, was found guilty, with a recommendation to mercy. He was remanded for sentence. George Leiteh, alias Leech, was convicted of forging a money-order receipt. The jury recommended him to mercy on the ground that accused had yielded to a sudden temptation. Sentence was deferred. ' CmUSTCHURCIf SITTINGS. Christehurch, Last Night. At the Supreme Court to-day an elderly man named Henry Scrimshaw was convicted of attempting to carnally know a child of five years, but was recommended to mercy on account of his age. Sentence was deferred. A young man named John James Gibbs was admitted to eighteen months' probation on a charge of forging a signature to a post office order, the Judge saying he looked upon the Probation Act as one applicable to eases of sudden temptation. Thomas William Dawson was acquitted on a charge of indecently assaulting a child of two and a-half years. Ernest Joseph Ditford, > lad of 15, who 'had the previous day pleaded guilty to a charge of indecear assault, was ordered to come up for sentence at the next criminal sitting, on condition that he should be kept under restraint at "the Samaritan Home in the meantime.
