When out of sight of the place of execution a Brahma blessed the body. The neck was garlanded and the bier smothered with flowers. Ladta of every household along the route loudly demanded to see the* dead. Hence, contrary to custom, the face was uncovered. The procession halted at almost every third house to allow the body to be viewed. A large percentage of the mourners belonged to respectable Calcutta families. Rice and paddy wore strewn along the route. Several Bengalis are projecting the erection at Chandernagore of a block of marbls over the ashes, inscribed, "Kunai died for his counEry."
