THE WOOL MARKET.

, PREMIER'S PROGNOSTICATION PROVED. A GREAT SURPRISE. PHENOMENAL OPENING SALE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The first wool sale of the 11108 !) season took place at the Town Hall to day. The result was the greatest surprise in the history of the local auctions, it was expected that a small rise might be chronicled, but lfill and Ililncs, representing Bradford linns, set the pace, and prices soared above brokers' estimates to an advance of %d a ]>ound m the closing rates of the last London sale, and then practically every bale was cleared. It was a phenomenal saie, in every way. The Americans <lid not bid, considering prices were too high above their limits, but then there was little wool in the condition and get-up suitable for their purpose. The values realised are all the more satisfactory when it is considered that the woo) w.is not of such good quality as that offering at the opening sale of last season, and was heavier in condition to the extent of 2 to 3 per cent. The bulk of the wool was purchased for Bradiord houses. The catalogue was not so heavy as thai of last November, due principally to groups holding hack to watch the trend of the market, and in a minor degree to wet weather interfering with shearing in some districts. The catalogue comprised 1380 bales, against 1715 last November; 1550 in November, 1900, and 1400 in November 1905. Prices averaged as under:—Mediu'ii halfbred 7d to Bd, super crossbred 0 3 / id to Bd, medium crossbred 5%d to o%d, inferior crossbred 5d to sVid, bellies and pieces 3d to 4'/ 4 d, stained pieces and locks l%d to 2%d, dead 3d to 4%d, ' crutchings l%d to 3 l / 2 d. J WOOL PROSPECTS. Auckland, Last Night. ' The wool clip in the North this season 1 has been a particularly satisfactory one, and the quality of the fleece coming in;o the stores is particularly good. Farmers I are feeling anything but happy over the 1 prospects of the market, however, and it is considered that the average price i for the coarser qualities will not go be- a yond s>/ 2 d per lh at the opening sale on the 25th instant. t
