Charles H. Baynes, clerk to tho Ki> witea County Council, died on Wednesday night from brain affection. Deceased was a very popular offices and had held his position for a-number of years with great ability. He is a great loss to the county and district. ) 'Deceased leaves a widow and a small family. Born only seven years after Waterloo, the son of an eminent authority on insanity (Dr. John Couolly, of Hanwell, Middlesex), the late Edward Tennyson Conolly was called to the bar on January 30, 1852. After practising for thirteen years in England as a member of the Home Circuit, Mr Conolly emigrated tu Xew Zealand, and, in ISUS, on being admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court, settled at l'icton, which lie represented in the Provincial Council of Marlborough from 1807 till 1870, when the provinces were abolished. Mr Conolly afterwards represented l'icton in Parliament koni 1882 until 1887. and was Minister fo? Justice in the Whitaker Government of 1882-3, and Minister for Justice ana At-torney-General in the Atkinson Government of 1883-4. On August 10, 1889, he was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court in Succession to Mr Justice Gillies, who had died suddenly at Auckland on the 2llth of the preceding month. Ex-Judge Conolly held his first session at Auckland eight days after his appointment, and, until ha resigned in September, 1903. Early in that year, during a sittings of tiro Supreme Court he was taken seriously ill. For some days he lost tho power of his sjieeeh. He retired in August, and Mr Justice Chapman was appointed to fill the vacancy. Mrs Conolly died some years ago, and there is a fairlj; large family, of whieh one is Mr Join Conolly, solicitor, of Blenheim.
