" THE CHRIST OF THE CROSS."

THE CHI'RCIi COMMITTEE'S REPORT. By" Telegraph.--Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. A discussion on Rev. ,1. Gibson Smith's book, "The Christ of the Cross," was resumed at a meeting of the General Assembly to-day. After some discussion a committee was appointed to consider the various motions and amendments

and draw up a resolution which in the opinion of the committee would coincide with the various views entertained by the Assembly. The committee represented all shades of opinion on the question involved in Rev. Smith's book. The committee unanimously arrived at the following resolution: The Assembly having had Us attention drawn to th'i book entitled, "'lite Christ of the t'Mss,'' published ;hy the lijev. iJohn Gibson Smith, of Wellington, also to the fact that subsequent to the publication of the book ilr. Smith has declared hia essential agreement with the standards of the church, express regret that Mr, Smith did really in a manner uncalled for attack and contradict the doctrine taught in our standards on the subject of the death of Christ, thereby grieving the consciences of his brethren, confirms the confessional doctrine on the subject which the Assembly now declares to be. the true nnd full expression of the Scriptural teaching on this doctrine, but, having regard to all the circumstances, resolves in the meantime to take no action further than to say that the Assembly enjoins Mr. Smith and all his brethren to be careful not even to appear to contradict the Church's teaching on the doctrines of the Attoncment, but to maintain the unity of doctrine as taught in thi* Church and to preserve, unbroken tin unanimity of the Church's testimony to this central truth of the Gospel. While the Assembly thus declares its unwavering adherence to the confessional standards on this vital doctrine, it desires at the same time to express only tho kindest feelings towards Mr. Smith and it makes this disposition of the case only because the interests of truth de mand it.

The recommendation, which was received with hearty applause, will bo considered to-morrow.
