At Waitara on Monday, after a long and painful illness, another of Tar.inaki's pioneer settlers, Mr. W. I. Cleave, passed away. Mr. Cleave left Cornwall, England, in 18(18, and with, tlis wife arrived in Taranaki in the same year. For u short time they lived at Wood-
Leigh, near New Plymouth. Mrs. Cleave was a niece of the late Mr. G. Cutiield, the iirst Superintendent of the province, and of Mrs. King, the wife of Captain King, li.N. from Woodlcigh Ihcy removed to Leppertoii, and as soon as a house was built, went on to their pro-! perty known as "I'encarrow" at Hulrnngi. Mrs. Cleave died in. 1875, but Mr. Cleave resided at, 'Teneanow" until his retirement from farming in 1801. lie visited England in 1882, and during his visit there was again married. He revisited England in "]S!)-I, and on his return to New Zealand built a home at Waitara, where, he lived in retire-
ment up to the time of his death. Mr. Cleave diil not fake any active part in public life, but he was a man of high character and of a kindly nature. Mr, Cleave was born in Cornwall, England, in the year 18'.!I. ,s„ thai he was 71 vears of age at the time of his death.
