I The Hawea (says tie Grey Argus) lies amongst the rocks with her bottom ' perforated and her decks giving way under the relentless strokes of the surging sea and the weight of her deckload of timber. Although it has been the good fortune of the port that; such deplorable accidents are infrequent, we are too well aware from past experience that tbe awful and uncertain forces of the ocean are liable at any moment to cast an unfortunate vessel on the rocks when negotiating the bar in the face of a treacherous sea. Few who have watched the rollers on the bar but have noticed flat at times, when all seems fairly smooth and apparently quite safe, ... an unusually large roller will suddenly come up out of the depths with on overwhelming force calculated to dash any vessel on the rocks that is unfortunate enough to encounter it in its irresistible rush shorewards. This, it appears, is what happened to the -doomed Hawea.
