OFFENCES AGAINST CHILDREN.
DEPLORABLE STATE OF AFFAIRS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Xight. Prior to the discharge of the grand, jury at the sessions of the Supreme Court, the foreman submitted to Mr. Justice Edwards the following unanimous resolution:—'That the grand jury has the utmost horror and concern at the continued increase in crimes of indecent assault on young children, and respectfully urges that whenever a prisoner is found guilty of this offence the most drastic form of punishment should lie meted out to him."
His Honor said that he agreed with the jury, and deplored the terrible increase in such offences. He wished sometimes that the. duty of dealing with these cases fell to 'someone else. There, were some very difficult cases. He had nothing further to say under the circumstances, except, to make a recommendation, but be could assure them that the facts caused him quite as much anxiety as they had given the jury.
