ill!. JAMKS ALLEN ENTERTAINED. Milton, Last Night. Mr. •James Allen was entertained ;it a banquet to-night by tlie electors ol Bruce. The large gathering was representative of nearly all parts of the electorate, some of the people coming forty miles to attend it. The proceedings were very hearty, and quite a number of speeches were made eulogistic of Mr. Allen's services to the district and also to the Dominion, In his reply, .Mr. Allen took a retrospect of the legislation of the last sixteen years, and contended that if there had bce.i a change J of Ministry in that time the chances were that more would have been done to produce a contented people. No party in the country had a right to tlic title of Liberal, and the record ol' the past was proof oi this.

THE EDUCATION ACT. Auckland, Last Night. In speaking at Grey Lynn to-night, 3lr. Oliver Nicholson, who is in opposition to the Minister for Education foi the Orey Lynn seat, referred to the statement made hy the Prime Minister on -Saturday night regarding the deeision of the Government respecting the teachers' salaries. JJc said that the Prime Minister and the two other Ministers with whom he consulted 011 Saturday were overriding an Act of Parliament for election purposes. The plain interpretation of the Act was that teachers were not entitled to what thee were now to receive, and the three Ministers in granting it had usurped I the functions 01 Parliament. He suggested that Cabinet should have settled the point by bringing 011 a test case before the Court or by bringing in an amending Pill next year and making it retrospective.
