RECREATION GROUND PICNIC.
The jiknic promoted by the Recreation Spurts < ■ lonnit Committee i'ii sii])port of the Hoard's funds eventuated yesterday afternoon under good wealh- ! er conditions. About 2(iUU ]ieti[de attenI di.'d, and were entertained with the an- ! ties o!' Hit; 'l'r itappi Band. Jerusalem ! Noddy, children's amusement. motor ear ride?, etc., to tile accompaniment of ;i first-class programme of music ren-j dered by tile Harrison Baud under Conductor XU-Conuvll. 'l'lrc children's races, skippingY'ompctitions. and other events contrived to -sustain the interest of the athletically inclined youngsters. The. programme arranged for more mature athletics eventuated only in part, tile bicycle races having been withdrawn because of lack of entries owing to tin road races at Waitara. The defections, however, did nol, have any appreciable effect, the public recognising the function was merely a picnic for funds to improve tllcir splendid asset in the Recreation Grounds. The enthusiastic members of tile Sports' committee worked hard to keep the programme moving and have no reason to be disappointed with the patronage accorded. Good business was done by .Mr. W. Eraser's and Messrs Gilmour and Clarke's motor cars, and the afternoon tea booths conducted hy Mr. .1, W. Thompson, did a nourishing business. The Premier (Sir .1. G. Ward) accompanied by his Worship the Mayor, visited the grounds late in the afternoon, when he was met by Mr. 1\ I'. Corkill. Vlniirman of the lieereation Ground- Hoard. .Mr. .\. Humphries chairman of ihe Sport- Ground Committee. and oilier members of Ihe committee. Sir .10-seph was shown over the grounds and entertained at -afternoon tea. the function closing .shortly after his departure. Till- success of yesterday's children's picnic at the local Uereation Grounds gives rise to the hope that the picnic will be made an annual affair. Were this done, an effort could be made to secure tile co-operation of school teachers anil committees to provide a "day out'' for all the children of the district. There should be no difficulty in the way, except that means would have to be provided for the conveyance of the children attending Ihe schools off the railway line. We commend the suggestion to the consideration of t'iie teachers and school committees in tile hope that they will join in with tll>! town people in arranging for the holding of a real children's carnival at a place which offers sueli unrivalled advantages as the lieereation Grounds do.
