THE OPIUM TRADE.
A CHRISTCHURCH CLERICAL CONDEMNATION.

The debate on the motion relative to the opium trallic was resumed at the sitting of the Diocesan Synod tiiia afternoon, when, after considerable discussion, the following resolution was adopted:—"That this Synod desires to express its admiration of the way In which the Government and people 'of China are endeavoring to rid themselves of 'the terrible evil of opium. The Synod is deeply sensible of the national sin and disgrace in which the IndoChinese opium truffle involves tile British Empire, and whilst thankful that in response to China's appeal for co-op-~ nation some means a''e now being taken to limit the export of opium from India, trusts that the British Government will exert the forces which it command* to terminate the trade which ■the Brilisli i|ou«c of Commons has twice unanimously declared to be 'morally indefensible.' " It was also resolved Miat Ihe Bishop be repectfully requested to forward a copy of this resolution (o the Archbishop of Canterbury.
