PREMIER'S REPLY TO MR. REID. , Melbourne, October 21. The Premier, Mr. A. Deakin, replying to Mr. Reid's attack, said the Government, far from being extravagant, had been rigorously economical. The sum returned to the States had gone up in gratifying fashion, but still the States [were far from satisfied. On the question of Commonwealth borrowing, it was essential that some understanding should be arrived at Between the Commonwealth and the States. It would be with the utmost Teluetance tliat ae should see the Commonwealth embark on a borrowing policy. The Government was carrying out a policy which the people of Australia (were more and more coming to appreciate, and the Government was carrying it out with the assistance of the Labor Party, with whom its relations were entirely in accord. The Labor Party held a caucus last evening, and decided to support the Government.
