The Wellington cricket season opened on Saturday under splendid weather conditions. Details of the games are as follows:—Y.M.C.A. 80 runs, v. Old Boys, 104 for 5 wickets (Tucker 38, J. O. Blacklock 45, MouagUan 27 not out); Midland, 230 for 7 wickets (Briee 75, Mansom 49), v. Gas Co.; Newtown, 154 (Alpu 35, Laws 51), v. Wellington, 30 for 5 wickets; Phoenix 150 (Little 38, Burton 57) v. Petone, 31 runs for 2 wickets. The first round of the Ghvistchurcli competition resulted as folows:—First grade: Sydenham, 314, heat We3t Christchurch, 190 and 108 for 5 wickets (D. Eeese 50 not out) oil the first innings; Kiecarton, 200 (If. B. Whitta 05), heat East Christchurch, 1.52 and 82 for nine wickets; Linwood. 380 (E. Ridley 140 not out and F. Wilding 50) and 34 for six wickets beat S. Albans, 219 (B. B. Wood 80). "Joe" Darling, probacy the Jiest' skiipper Australia ever had, retired last montili with t'ne splendid average of 34.51 for 332 innings, 26 times not out.
