MOA ROAD BOARD.
The Moa Road Board held its usual monthly meeting on Saturday. There were present: Messrs. H. Trimble (ehairman), T. Ohamncy, A. kiwrenee, F. Capper, G. Sutherland, and C. Young. Mr. P. 0. Morton, elerk to the Kgmont Road Board, wrote that that Board had voted £lO towards repairs on the Kaipi road, and requested the Moa Board to ! expend the money.—The foreman recommended that the iinoney be exI pended in eutting-down some of the hills, and this eonrse will be adopted. The chairman reported that the foreman had completed the tunnel on Suffolk road, titift long, 15ft high, and 3ft tiin wide, at a total cost of £7 9s, pro--1 vide'd l the .Hoard approved of the foreman receiving 2s a day extra whilst I working in the tunnel.—This was approved. •Mr. Lawrence reported on an allevaI tion in ihe bridge to be creeled by Mr. Morcine on the I'edi'ord road. Owing to there being some excellent limber available from lhe .Sash and Door Com pan old bridge, he was going to make the bridge for cart trallii- instead of a foot- | bridge. Ife -moved that I lie grant of £3 for tin; work be increased by C2.~ Approved. The chairman suggested setting-up the usual committee to estimate quantities of metal required on the roads and call for tenders. He pointed out that the Board had spent, more than should have been spent this year, still most of the road accounts were in a fairly satisfactory state. The amou:it [iaid in interest on overdraft was about £25.—A committee was set up. comprising tht» chairman and Messrs. Capper, Lawrence, Sutherland, and ('hard, to go into the matter, and it was arranged that the committee should nicit on the 31st instant.
It was decided that :Oi should be expended in prospecting shell-rock deposits on 111'. Young's properly oil the l'atapiko road, it being reported that river .stone was becoming exceedingly scarce.
Messrs. Orbell and llackay, the JSoard's engineers, reported that the draining contract on the Bedford road was proceeding satisfactorily and hai'ing a beneficial effect on the road. Coiltractors for the Lincoln road metalling had their plant on the ground, and work would be resumed as soon as the roid was sulliciently dry. They also forwarded plan and estimate of the Motukawa bridge.
Mr. .Chainney considered it would be economical to put in a tunnel instead of the bridge, 'Mr. Orbell was strongly opposed to tunnelling, .stating the ground was quite unsuitable. some discussion it was decided to proceed with a. trial tunnel under At'. , Chiiinney's supervision. Mr. Young brought forward the matter of erecting a bridge over the .Maku stream on the Mana road, and asked for a substantial grant from the bridge fund, lie pointed out that the proper- ; ties on the road were saddled with several .special rates, so much so that it. would be unfair to ask the settlers to rate themselves 'for this work. —It being estimated that CIS 4 would be required, the Hoard decided to uraut three-fourth.; ( UUS) out of the bridge fund, eondiliiuially upon (lie settlers interested submitting to a special vale of twothirds id' a penny in (be pound for this year.—Tenders will be called for the erection of the bridge.
H was decided lo inform "Mr. A. K Surrey that before carting further logs on the Kverelt road lie must strengthen the bridges. Accounts amounting to £129 3s 8(1 were passed .for payment.
