A POPULAR WIN. (By Moturoa). It goes without saying that the news of Mr D. O'Brien's win with Marsimii in the well-endowed Uaulfieid Cup on. Saturday was received with enthusiasm throughout the Dominion, and especially in New Plymouth, where iboth owner and horse were well-known and resided until quite recently. By Malatua from Grafin, Maranui was bred on staying lines, and his owner very wisely gave the horse plenty of time to mature, not racing him at two years. On the local tracks Maranui showed excellent smartness, and when the old sport, '■ Dan of the Cri'," expressed an 'opinion that he had bred a champion, very few doubted his word, and the colt's 3-year-old career was looked forward to as likely to be a most promising one. Maranui was sent, across to Australia to contest the A.Y.C. Derby of last season, and was given a pipeopener in the Raw-son Stakes at Sydney TaM's meeting in September He failed ladly on this occasion, and ran unplaced iii the Dcnby, Metropolitan Handicap and several smaller races. The first victory to go down to the bearer of the well-kiiwra "rose anil l-Inek stripes ' was in the Kogarah Slakes, at Moorefield, in February last, and the following month the Pace Welter, at Warwick Farm, and the Pvosehill Cup came 'his way. But these wins did not bring in muck coin, and his owner must have been a good deal on!, of pocket as far as Maranui was concerned. At the recent A.V.C. spring meeting, Marunui ran two thirds to Mooltan in the Spring Stakes and Metropolitan Handicap. and finished out of place in the Craven Stakes. In my notes in Saturday's supplement a par. was given to '•Dan O'lSrien's bad luck." and. strange to say, it appeared to be the turning ■point in "Dan's" fortunes. Maranui winning the sann- day. The C'aullield Clip is a mile and a-half hamlilap of 3000 sovs.. of which 2500 sovs. go to the winner, together with wagers. Mr. O'Brien's win mu-t rim into a considerable sum. Mavsuini is en<»a"eil in the Melbourne Cup with Sst 3llbj Including 101'bs penalty, and now that the liorso has struck form a win in the big Victorian Handicap is the worst Xew Zealander* wish Sir. Dan. O'Brien. ENGLISH RACING.
