After filling the position of Professor of. Anatomy here for some years, lie went into private practice. It is understood that he served as a volunteer civil surgeon in the Franco-German War. lie took a keen interest in local affain. and was a mem>ber oi the Drainage Board and president of the Olago Rugby Union from 1887 to 18110, inclusive. Sando, tlhc young Japanese who wis e&bin-iboy o.u thy steamer Mortlake, and who deserted from her in Lyttdton, appeared this morning at the Lyttelton Police Court, lie was § charged with having dosented, and admitted the charge of being an undesirable immigrant. No steps in connection with the .desertion were takeu, out lie was remanded for eight days to allow the Collector of Customs to communicate with the Colonial Secretary for advice as to his disposal. The agents of the vessel expressed their willingness to pay all expenses to send the youth hack to the Mortlake at Newcastle, and it is understood that he will be despatched to hia dhip. | NORTH ISLAND BUTTER IN CANTERBURY. "One pound out of every five pounds of butter used ia Cliristchurch during the winter comes from the North Island," said the secretary of the Canterbury Central .Dairy Co. to-day. "The quantity of butter brought here from the North Island is increasing every year, and if it were not for the North island butter coming here prices would be at a famine level'during the winter, •probably 2s or 2s Gd. per pound." At the annua] meeting of the Canterbury Central Dairy Co. to-day .Mr. .John Rennie called attention to the spread of tuberculosis among cattle and pigs in Xpiw Zealand, and expressed the opinion that an important factor was iu the infection of skim milk returned from t'he creameries. One or two cows, he said, could infect the whole supply, and be had himself noticed the spread of disease amongst pigs fed on the skim milk. r ''Men arc cheap and pigs arc; dear, 5 ' he remarked in reply to a question about the position of the ordinary consumer in the matter. Mr. Rennie moved that the directors should consider the advisahleness of pasteumi;ig the skim milk, and his motion was carried. The shareholders did not seem to regard the matter as one of great importance, for a number left the meeting during a brief debate on the motion. ARBITRATION. Christehurch, Saturday Night. An application has been made toi the Arbitration Court by both employ;ers and employees for an interpretation of a clause iu the Canterbury timber yard, eoal yard, and sawmill employees' award. The clause refers to the employment of yard laborers. The employees contend that although yard laborers are paid by the hour, they should be considered as weekly wage num. INCENDMRISM AT RAXGIOUA. Saturday Night. Another unoccupied dwelling at Rangiora was set fire to last night, and by the time the fire brigade got water on, the interior of the house was ruined and part of the outer walls destroyed. The outbreak occurred about 11 o'clock, and an explosion of gas drew attention to it, the meter being no doubt turned on. The five had then a strong hold of the interior, showing that it had been started from within t'he house, which was a wellbuilt six-roomed one, and which be-' longed to the estate of the late John Donovan. It was valued at about £4/>O. It had been untenanted for a fortnight. There was an insurance in the Commercial Union, but the amount was not ascertainable. *
The frequency of incendiary lires in unoccupied houses in TCangiorn of late is becoming ;t serious matter, and the police 'have been tinnblc to attach suspicion to anyone. At one time old and isolated buildings were set tire to, but the incendiary seems now to be turning his intention to better-class places in the closely populated parts, and a serious conflagration inny yet result.
