-Major Sheet, of fame, of tin Canadian military forces, who is at present touring .New Zealand, has received notice ol transfer to India, lie leaves for llobart. en route, in a few days. Mr. 11. Y\. Lucy writes anent .Mr. Joseph (. ham her lam : —"Pnun time to time paragraphs appear in the papers announcing that Mr. Chamberlain has considerably prolited by his stay at Aix-les-Bains. more or less vaguely hinting at permanent restoration to health and return to active political life. It is said that these things are devised with the amiable object! of keeping up the patient's spirits, when, glancing over the morning paper, he conies upon the announcement. Mr. Chamberlain, even though broken down in health, is ihe last man to be deceived by these wellmeant devices. Unhappily, there is not the slightest hope beyond the desire that the remainder of his life may be as comparatively painless as is his present conilition. A member of the House of Commons. recently home from Aix, describes that condition as-pitiful in its helplessness. He moves about only with the assistance of the gracious lady who has devoted the whole of her life and energies to the comfort of her husband. He can walk the fewest .step** only with be* assistance, lie cannot write, and speaks with painful diiliculty. One comfort left lo liiiu, perennial in its solace, is his' cigar. lie has fairly good appejju. sleeps well, and never repines at hi'* sudden tragic exile from Ihe stage upon which he a few years ago played a leading part."
