MR. MALONE'S CANDIDATURE.
To the Editor. Sir,—Mr. Malone is again a little misleading to the electors, this time on the subject of the Taranaki liram-h of the Xew Zealand Liberal and Liibour 1-('dera-tion. I have been a member for some time, but I cannot call to mind that body being (as Mr. Malone asserts it was) practically told by Ministers that all would-be candidates would be allowed to stand, and that selection and election should be b_v the people and not bv intriguants. Nor is it a fact that: Mr. C. K. Bellringer, with the express sanction of the Government, lias been nominated by the Kederatinn. It is, however, a fact that the Federation nt the Premier's request left the choice of the Government candidate entirely to him, and Sir Joseph Ward in the exercise of his discretion, and possibly aft'r consultation with his .Minister?,, selected Mr. Bellringer. Moreover, if Mr. Malone correctly judges the feeling of the Government on the matter, one can only assume that before that decision was arrived at, the claims of Mr. Malone himself on the party' were carcfu'ly considered. We can also assume that the Liberal electors of Taranaki are shrewd enough to recognise that the second ballot is but a palliative measure, and that the only sure .preventive of the evils of vote-splitting is to vole solidly for the Government nominee.—l am, &c„ CLAUDE 11. WESTON.
