APPROVED IN A MODIFIED l<Uli.\l. CLAUSES OBJECTED TO DELETED. The new dairy regulations have been passed into law, but in a form whk'ii, while more popular, will not be so elective in enabling inspectors to deal with the unsatisfactory minority of milk producers (says the New Zealand Times). As they have come from the Agricultural, Pastoral, and Stock Committee of the House, they contain but one clause which has aroused the opposition of dairymen—the registration fees of Is, os, aud 10s remain, though the transfer fee has been reduced from 2j 6d to Is. The deletions and amendments are as follow: DELETIONS. The following clauses have been deleted: — . That the inspector may withhold a certificate until the premises have been completed according to "the regulations. That every dairy shall be provided with a cowshed suitable for milking purposes. That the inside walls of the byre shall be swept once a month. That manure, etc., shall be removed 30 feet away from the shed within two hours. The whole of sub-section " g," providing that the milk-stand, etc., shall be 30 feet away from shed, 50 feet from piggery, and 60 feet from a likely source of contamination.

That no open water shall be within 50 yards of a piggery. That a metal label with the owner's | name shall be on each can. That the name of the owner must be I on his cart. / That no cow or any other animal * shall be at large within 30 feet of byre, j That no milk-cart shall be used for conveying objectionable material. 1 That providing for appeal to the Chief ; Inspector oi Stock. AMENDMENTS. The amendments are as follow: The transfer fee is reduced to Is. The inside of the byre need only be 1 whitewashed once a year. Only buildings " hereafter to be erected" shall not be within 30 feet of a stable, etc. The yard may be paved with concrete, wood, or other suitable .material. The same applies to the "race." The water for watering stock is described as requiring to be " wholesome" instead of "pure." In the clause regarding provision of water in the shed the worj s ' for cleansing the floor of the shed" have besn struck out. The word "Jiimself" has been substituted for " his person," ami " suitalil has been deleted in the clause concerning the clothes of the milker. The .provision for straining milk now reads: '"Thoroughly strain all milk.'' In regard to cooling cream the words "by a method approved by the inspector" have been struck out. The provision regarding the cooling of milk, ete., has been altered by the Uletion of the words: "Or within 30 feet thereof." The method of cleansing cans, etc.. has been reduced to " shall be cleansed,' "rinsing with cold water, then washing with warm water, scrubbing with a | brush, and scalding with steam or boiling water," having been struck out. I In regard to the time of cleansing < milking utensiK this is to be done "ts | soon as possible." the cans used for' storing milk to be cleansed "as soon as possible after being emptied." the same with eans used for conveyance of milk. Cans consigned are also to be cleansed "as soon as pos>ible." In the matter of condemning cans the dairyman is to receive fourteen days' clear notice. In eleansing rubber parts of milking machines the words " or sterilised " have been added. The provision against storing the machines in the byre now on'.y applies to the parts which come in contact with the milk. The clause regarding "beastings" now reads: "Sell, barter, etc., any milk drawn from any cow within four davs Jrom the date of calving, or within any longer period thereafter during which the milk is unfit for use." In the case of animals which may not enter a byre, "dairy cows" is made to read "dairy cattle," and "any animal" includes any poultry or pigeon which may " not remain," the word " enter " being struck out. In the clause dealing with cleaning of conveyances the stipulation in two cases "to the satisfaction of the inspector" has been deleted. j
